Sk’elep Cultural Safety Training Series
Indigenous Peoples are the fastest growing demographic of the Canadian population, with a significant potential to contribute to future economic growth and development. Sk’elep Reconciliation has launched a series to guide your business or organization towards an authentic understanding and appreciation for reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. Cultural Safety is an outcome based on respectful engagement which strives to address power imbalances within systems. All workshops are thoughtfully modeled on Indigenous ways of knowing using the circle process.
History / Land Acknowledgement
Learn the history of Canada through an Indigenous lens and how to recognize the ongoing impacts of colonization and Indian Residential Schools. Learn how to respectfully acknowledge land. Explore the purpose of doing a meaningful acknowledgement in contrast with a tokenized land acknowledgement that honours both community and land based reconciliation.
Indigenous World View Vs Western World View
Learn how the values, philosophies and traditions of Indigenous cultures differ from Eurocentric cultures. Learn how to understand other world views and to expand your Indigenous cultural competencies within your school or organization.
Hidden Biases and Stereotypes
Explore how common hidden biases and stereotypes influence the way that we see Indigenous Peoples in systems and as individuals, and work towards deconstructing these myths to build authentic and lasting relationships.
Power & Privilege
What is privilege? Who has it? Who benefits from having it? How can we use our privilege to address inequities relative to our relationships with Indigenous Peoples? Address inherent power imbalances between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples in systems and as individuals to find creative solutions to workplace challenges.
Responsible Allyship
Learn how to be an effective ally to Indigenous Peoples. Explore how being an ally is not an identity but is an active process. Familiarize yourself with up-to-date terminology to ensure effective working relations.
How We Can Help
Sk’elep Reconciliation will show you how to transition into responsible reconciliation with action related goals specific to your school, business or organization. These involve, but are not limited to, hiring practice, retention, giving back to Indigenous communities, partnerships and commitment to lifelong learning about reconciliation.
Box and Circle Exercise
Skelep Reconciliation will facilitate this experiential exercise for professionals. Created by Jann Derrick in 1990 and as described on her website, “the teachings and the model have been used globally by professionals seeking to create impactful workshops that address cultural sensitivity, the history of colonization, and supporting critical work to advance anti oppressive, inclusive practice. The workshop explores the effects of Residential Schools and Canada’s Policy of Assimilation and how we can work together to impact meaningful change.”
